- John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF) commissions white papers to examine critical problems and optimal solutions for increasing geriatric nursing capacity.
- Claire M. Fagin and Ada Sue Hinshaw, in collaboration with JAHF staff, develop and submit the first Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) grant proposal.
- 2000
- JAHF awards a $6.4 million grant to the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) to establish the BAGNC Program and Coordinating Center (CC).
- Claire Fagin assumes BAGNC Program Director role.
- JAHF selects and funds 5 Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (CGNEs): Oregon Health & Science University; University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; University of California, San Francisco; University of Iowa; and University of Pennsylvania.

- BAGNC program announces its first cohort of 7 Claire M. Fagin Fellows and 10 Hartford BAGNC Scholars.
- Expert panel commissioned by JAHF & the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) publishes recommendations – Caring for Older Americans: Recommendations for Building A National Program For Graduate Nursing Education in Gerontology.
- CC convenes first CGNE meeting.
- BAGNC holds 1st Leadership Conference in Chicago.
- JAHF awards CC $2.2 million grant to support the Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program.

- BAGNC program announces the second Scholar & Fellow cohort: 9 Fellows and 11 Scholars.
- BAGNC sponsors 1st all-CGNE Meeting at the University of Pennsylvania.
- Mary Starke Harper (MSH) guest lectures at Annual BAGNC Leadership Conference in Boston.
- 2003
- BAGNC program announces the third Scholar & Fellow cohort: 8 Fellows and 12 Scholars.
- JAHF augments original BAGNC grant by $3.05 million.
- JAHF funds communications component of Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI).
- BAGNC names Distinguished Lectureship in honor of Mary Starke Harper (MSH).
- Florence Wald gives 1st MSH Distinguished Lectureship at Annual BAGNC Leadership Conference in San Diego, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.
- 2004
- BAGNC program announces the fourth Scholar & Fellow cohort: 8 Fellows and 13 Scholars.
- JAHF augments original BAGNC grant by $1.2 million.
- CGNEs convene 2nd Biennial Meeting at Oregon Health & Science University; outcomes include joint publication in Nursing Outlook which presented a crosscutting analysis of the collective accomplishments of the CGNEs.
- Two new partners award CC funds to support scholarships and fellowships: The Atlantic Philanthropies (AP) & The Mayday Fund (Mayday).
- Luther Christman gives MSH Distinguished Lectureship at Annual BAGNC Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

- BAGNC program announces the fifth Scholar & Fellow cohort: 11 Fellows and 13 Scholars.
- JAHF renews BAGNC program with $10.4 million grant.
- BAGNC announces first AP funded fellows.
- BAGNC announces first Mayday Awards.
- Claire M. Fagin completes 5 years as Program Director and gives the Mary Starke Harper Distinguished Lectureship during Annual BAGNC Leadership Conference in Orlando.
- Patricia Archbold assumes role of BAGNC Program Director.
- JAHF & BAGNC partner with the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to develop a Summer Institute on Aging Research Preconference Workshop for Nurses.

- BAGNC renames BAGNC Fellowship Award in Honor of Claire M. Fagin.

- BAGNC launches its 10th Anniversary Celebration; includes special events and YouTube contest .
