Program Impact

In its quest to prepare a workforce capable of providing quality care to all older Americans, the BAGNC program has produced significant results.

As of March 2009 BAGNC has awarded 118 predoctoral scholarships, 4 MBA scholarships, and 77 fellowships. These awardees are teaching the next generation of geriatric nurses and researching vital gerontological issues. A recent report by independent evaluators revealed BAGNC alumni/ae are highly productive and successful.

Examples of their contributions to the field as of June, 2009 include:

  • 69 alumni hold faculty positions within schools of nursing
  • 87 alumni assumed leadership roles at local, regional and national levels including 12 positions as either editor of a journal or special issue
  • 499 publications disseminated results of their work and informed the field of geriatric nursing and health care
  • 20,000 undergraduate, 3,277 graduate and 159 doctoral students were taught by BAGNC alumni
  • $36.9 million in grant support was awarded to BAGNC alumni to strengthen the scientific basis for care of older persons

While we are pleased with the many accomplishments of this program we are even more excited by the future promised by the resources now in place - larger numbers of geriatric nursing faculty; strengthened geriatric nursing leadership through regional networks; nationwide improvements in elder care through collaborative Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNEs) initiatives; expanded geriatric nursing capacity through new partnerships; and increased awareness of geriatric issues and best practices through dissemination of this work.
