Program Goals

Better Research, Better Education, and Better Practice:
Three Keys to Better Nursing Care for Elders

From 2000-2005, BAGNC generated a ground swell of interest in academic geriatric nursing and contributed to improvements in geriatric health care. The program built capacity by 1) funding scholars and fellows, who are the faculty and management leaders of the future, 2) coordinating centers of excellence at five of the nation's top schools of geriatric nursing, and 3) building interdisciplinary research competencies in academic geriatric nurses.

BAGNC's goals for 2005-2011 are to:

  • Increase the cadre of well-prepared academic geriatric nurses.
  • Build leadership capacity in academic geriatric nurses.
  • Build interdisciplinary research competencies in academic geriatric nurses.
  • Maintain coordination of the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence and foster collaboration among all Hartford Foundation geriatric-nursing initiatives (HGNI) by stimulating and supporting cooperative research, education, and practice initiatives.
  • Support dissemination of activities and findings from the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing initiative.
  • Facilitate the inclusion of the new HCGNEs as partners within the BAGNC cooperative.
