Leadership Conference

The Chicago Athletic Association
November 14th & 15th 2001

The John A. Hartford Foundation’s commitment to increase the nation’s capacity to provide effective and affordable care to its rapidly increasing older population provided the vision and resources for the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Program. This major initiative focuses on developing geriatric nursing leaders and scholars to advance the quality of health care to older adults and to inform health policy. Under the direction of Dr. Claire M. Fagin, Program Director, The American Academy of Nursing provides the overall coordination and administration of this exciting new program. One feature of this program will be the annual opportunities for leadership development, such that all scholars and their mentors will have an opportunity to interact with the Advisory Committee, including the directors of the five Centers for Geriatric Nursing Excellence (CGNEs), and other experts in gerontology and related areas in order to:
  • assist the scholars to orchestrate full careers;
  • facilitate the scholars in obtaining the skills training necessary to build programs of research;
  • encourage the development of a national network of geriatric nurse researchers/leaders; and
  • link research to practice and policy changes.
Full career development presupposes that an individual will be capable of knowledge development, knowledge dissemination, knowledge utilization, and the resource development to move all of these efforts forward.

These opportunities for leadership development will take place in conjunction with the annual meetings of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) in order to encourage the aforementioned networking. Every effort will be made to extend the life of presentations made and networking accomplished through the program’s web site.
