The Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence influence the field of geriatric nursing within their regions. Below are just a few examples of their efforts.
Northwest Coalition for Geriatric Nursing Education
This Coalition of Schools and Colleges of Nursing seeks to develop and nurture the best educational methods to foster excellent nurse clinicians, researchers, and teachers who are dedicated to the health and welfare of older adults. The site (1) provides instructional resources and strategies for integrating care of older adults into the nursing curriculum; (2) provides tools for assessing and monitoring the effectiveness of efforts to integrate gerontology into the curriculum; and (3) facilitates information sharing and communication among nursing faculty.
Southwest Consortium for Geriatric Nursing Education
The need for faculty geriatric expertise throughout Arizona and the Southwest region has stimulated formation of the Southwest Consortium for Geriatric Nursing Education, which includes the three Arizona state universities, Indian Health Service consultation, and Schools of Nursing from the surrounding Southwest states of Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Southwest Texas.
The consortium provides a network of nationally and internationally recognized faculty in geriatric nursing to mentor faculty learners across institutions through monthly seminars, a Visiting Scholar program, and consultation in grant preparation, and geriatric specialty consultation.
NEXus
Because of a need established by the Northwest Educational Outreach Network project, a former FIPSE project, the NEXus project was created in 2004 to increase the capacity of existing doctoral programs through sharing existing and creating new academic resources. This project is designed to create partnerships between programs, but does not seek to create a single doctoral program serving all Western states.
A consortium of Oregon Health & Science University, University of Colorado Denver, University of Northern Colorado, and University of Utah was established to carry through the goals of the NEXus project of increasing capacity via distance-accessible courses. Currently NEXus consists of seven institutions (Arizona State University, Oregon Health & Science University, University of Colorado Denver, University of Hawaii, University of New Mexico, University of Northern Colorado, and University of Utah) which provide distance-accessible courses and cognates for students. New cognates and courses are being developed.
Northern California Geriatric Education Center
The University of California, San Francisco collaborates with the Northern California Geriatric Education Center (NorCal GEC). NorCal GEC addresses faculty and curriculum development in geriatric education and training and provides clinical training of health professions students on the campuses of our consortium members. The NorCal GEC also addresses needs for geriatric education among health professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the Monterey Bay Area, and in the rural counties of Northern California.
