1. When should I start preparing my application?
START AS SOON AS THE CALL COMES OUT. Do not underestimate the time it takes to properly prepare and complete the application process. Applicants are encouraged to start gathering necessary information as early as possible to avoid missing the deadline.

Things to do as soon as the call is posted:

  • Update your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Begin thinking about your professional development plan and research project.
  • Identify and contact 3 individuals (other than your mentor) who will provide strong letters of recommendation; be sure to provide references with information about the program so that they can speak to your qualifications for this particular award.
  • Identify a primary mentor and begin discussions regarding their availability to serve in this role.  Also, define how their research and background is a good  match with your goals and research interests.

2. Who can help me with this process?
Your advisor, your mentor, a professor or a current or previous BAGNC Scholar or Fellow can assist you with the preparation of an application. Depending on the organizational structure and processes of your school, the office of research or graduate studies also may be helpful.

3. I am interested in a Predoctoral Scholarship. Which degrees does this include?
Our program is designed to support the preparation of academic geriatric nurses. The Predoctoral Scholarship thus supports nurses enrolled in or accepted into a doctoral nursing degree program with a focus on research and preparation for an academic role in nursing. Examples of such degrees are PhD and DNS. An example of a degree not supported is DNP. If in doubt, please contact us.

4. Are there exceptions to the page limits?
All specified page limits and format guidelines are absolute. If you do not follow the guidelines your application will not be reviewed.

5. What is an official transcript?
An official transcript
is a transcript prepared and approved by the university's registrar office, enclosed in a sealed envelope from the university with the university's official stamp. Please be aware that once the envelope has been opened the transcript is no longer considered official. Contact the registrar's office beginning in September to determine the process for requesting transcripts and ensuring they arrive at the Coordinating Center by the due date.

Unofficial Transcript

A number of universities provide online access to an unofficial copy of your transcript.  If this is not available, request that a copy from the registrar's office.  You may then scan it and upload into the online application.

NOTE: When possible have all official copies sent to you, and when you have them all gathered, forward them to the Coordinating Center in one package using a mail service that allows you to track your package.

6. To Whom Should I Address My Professional Letters?
Even though they are being uploaded, all professional letters are to be addressed to:

Patricia Archbold, RN, DNSc, FAAN, Program Director
American Academy of Nursing Coordinating Center
888 17th Street, NW Suite 800
Washington, DC 20006

7. How do I provide references ?
Applicants obtain a commitment from three individuals for professional references and enter the names and email addresses of these references into the application system at the same time. Each reference will receive an email with a unique password with which they can sign into the application system and provide the required information for the applicant. The system sends a verification/thank-you email to the person providing the reference and to the applicant when a reference has been completed.  It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the person providing the reference completes the two separate elements of the reference by the due date. Please see the application checklist for more detail.

8. When is my application due?
The deadline for receiving applications is January 13, 2010 by 12:00 Midnight, EST. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete (this includes all transcripts, as well as all references). The official transcripts must arrive to the Coordinating Center by close of business (5:00 p.m. EST, M-F) on January 13, 2010. There will be no exceptions made. Incomplete and/or late applications will be ineligible for review.

9. How soon will I know the final status of my application?
Following the BAGNC Selection Committee meeting we inform each applicant of the Committee's decision as soon as it is possible.

10. Is the Award taxable?
Each person's situation is different. You should work with a tax accountant regarding how to handle the award in your particular situation.
