"Program For Building Geriatric Nursing Strength"

 Nancy Watson, PhD, RN
The University of Rochester Nursing School Geriatric Investment Program (NSGIP) is aimed at developing the Center for Clinical Research on Aging into a leader in research on nursing home and dementia care across the acute and long term care continuum.  This will be accomplished through both educational and community initiatives.

First, the NSGIP will enhance geriatric nursing education at the University of Rochester by

  1. adding geriatric content to the health assessment course required of all Masters level nurse practitioner programs
  2. offering a post-Masters Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) Program and
  3. offering geriatric electives focusing on major research/policy issues related to nursing home and dementia care.
Second, the NSGIP will
  1. support community outreach initiatives to identify key community felt needs related to nursing home and dementia care
  2. facilitate development of innovative and/or evidence-based solutions through the establishment of work groups of stakeholders, list serves/websites with linkages to experts and resources, and educational programming for the community
  3. facilitate small projects to test creative solutions to identified problems
  4. assist in the evaluation of these projects and
  5. communicate findings to influence policy.
