"Geriatric Nursing: Lead, Link, and Learn at the University of Michigan"

 Donna Algase, RN, FAAN
In the U.S. and the State of Michigan, geriatric health care reform, particularly as the baby-boom generation ages, is and has been a loud and glaring need for a number of years.  In response, we focused our project on the link between research and health policy. Our aims are two:

  1. to advance standards or care and health policy affecting geriatric nursing and care of frail and vulnerable elders and
  2. to escalate growth in the cadre of nurses with advanced preparation and strength in geriatric nursing.
Toward these ends, we are sponsoring a statewide network to evolve and advance a health policy agenda regarding aged care for the State of Michigan.  Further, students at all levels will be actively involved in this network through an internship program.  Interns will connect an area of the policy agenda to individual faculty research projects to synchronize our knowledge development efforts with the data-based information needed to support policy development. Interns receive stipends, travel support, and funds to support their projects.
